We live in an age that is often described as an era of progress. Technology is developing at an extraordinary pace, information can be accessed within seconds, and knowledge that was once difficult to obtain is now readily available through the internet and social media.
These developments have brought many benefits to human life, including education. Technology has opened countless opportunities for students to learn, explore new ideas, communicate, and develop skills beyond the traditional classroom.
However, behind this remarkable progress lies an issue that should not be overlooked: the gradual shift in educational values, particularly in respect for teachers, discipline, manners, responsibility, and student behavior.
Times have changed, and children today are growing up in an environment very different from that of previous generations. They have greater access to information, are more willing to express their opinions, and are often more critical of the world around them.
Being critical is not a bad thing. In fact, critical thinking is an important part of modern education. However, critical thinking must be accompanied by ethics, humility, good manners, and respect for others.
When Teachers Were Deeply Respected
If we look back at education in previous generations, the relationship between teachers and students was often characterized by a strong sense of respect.
When students met their teachers outside the classroom, they would usually greet them politely and demonstrate a respectful attitude. In the classroom, students were expected to listen carefully while the teacher was explaining a lesson. Talking loudly, disturbing classmates, or creating unnecessary noise was considered inappropriate.
Even when a student skipped school and later encountered a teacher, the student might feel deeply embarrassed because there was an awareness that he or she had done something wrong.
This does not mean that education in the past was perfect. Every generation has its own challenges and weaknesses. Nevertheless, there is one important value from the past that deserves to be preserved: the understanding that a teacher is not merely someone who delivers academic knowledge, but also someone who helps shape a student's character.
Today's Students Are More Critical—but They Must Remain Respectful
Children today have unprecedented access to information. Through social media, YouTube, search engines, and various digital platforms, they can discover knowledge that may not yet have been discussed in the classroom.
As a result, it is natural for students to ask more questions and express their opinions more confidently. This can be a positive development. Teachers should not be afraid of students who ask difficult questions or hold different opinions.
The problem arises when confidence turns into disrespect—when students belittle their teachers, speak harshly, argue without proper manners, or assume that information obtained from social media automatically makes them more knowledgeable than their teachers.
Being critical is not the same as being disrespectful. Having the courage to express an opinion does not give anyone the right to humiliate another person.
Students should certainly be allowed to disagree with their teachers. They should be encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and even correct a teacher when they have valid evidence or a well-founded argument.
But disagreement must be expressed respectfully.
A truly educated person is not simply someone who knows a great deal. It is someone who knows how to use knowledge wisely and respectfully.
When Teachers Become Afraid to Discipline Students
Another issue that deserves serious attention is the relationship between teachers, schools, and parents when students violate school rules.
Teachers should never use violence or impose punishment that violates a child's rights, dignity, or safety. Schools must establish clear, fair, reasonable, and educational disciplinary procedures.
At the same time, every mistake should have an appropriate educational consequence.
When a student breaks a rule and receives a reasonable warning or disciplinary measure according to school policy, parents should not immediately assume that the teacher is wrong. Parents should first find out what actually happened.
In previous generations, when children came home complaining that a teacher had reprimanded them, parents would often ask, "What did you do wrong?"
That simple question taught children an important lesson: they were responsible for their own actions.
Today, however, there are situations in which some parents immediately defend their children without first understanding the complete circumstances. If this happens repeatedly, children may begin to believe that they do not have to take responsibility for their mistakes because their parents will always protect them.
This can create a dangerous pattern.
A child who never learns to face the consequences of inappropriate behavior may struggle to develop independence, discipline, and responsibility later in life.
Schools and Parents Must Become Partners
The education of children cannot be placed entirely on the shoulders of schools. Likewise, parents cannot expect teachers to take full responsibility for developing their children's character.
Schools and families must work together as partners.
Teachers are responsible for teaching, guiding, directing, and educating students during school hours. Parents, meanwhile, have an equally important responsibility to continue developing those values at home.
If schools teach discipline, parents should support it. If a teacher corrects a child because of inappropriate behavior, parents should seek to understand the situation before drawing conclusions.
At the same time, schools must also maintain open communication with parents. Disciplinary measures should be based on clear rules, applied fairly, and designed primarily to educate rather than to punish.
When schools and parents work together, teachers do not feel that they are facing every challenge alone, and parents do not feel that the school is taking over their role.
Education Is More Than Memorization
A good education is not simply about how much information a student can memorize or how high a student's academic grades are.
Education is also about how a person applies knowledge in real life.
A student may achieve excellent grades in mathematics, master technology, speak several languages, and possess extensive knowledge. But if that student lacks discipline, cannot respect others, refuses to accept responsibility, and has poor manners, then education has not yet achieved its full purpose.
Society needs an educated generation with strong character.
We need young people who can think critically while remaining humble. We need a generation that is confident enough to express its opinions while still respecting others. We need children who can master technology without becoming controlled by it.
Building a Shared Educational Agreement
Schools and parents therefore need to establish a clear understanding about the education and development of students.
Such an agreement may include attendance, discipline, appropriate use of smartphones and digital devices, manners, dress codes, respect for teachers, responsibility for schoolwork, and reasonable consequences for violations of school rules.
These rules should not exist merely to frighten students. Their purpose should be to build positive habits.
Students need to understand that every action has consequences. When they make mistakes, an appropriate consequence should not automatically be viewed as an act of hostility from a teacher. It can be part of the learning process through which students develop responsibility.
Of course, discipline must always be applied wisely. Correction does not have to mean anger, and discipline does not have to involve violence.
Teachers can establish firm boundaries while maintaining compassion, dignity, and respect for students.
We Must Not Allow Technological Progress to Overcome Human Values
Technology will continue to develop. Children will have increasingly easy access to information. Artificial intelligence, the internet, social media, and other emerging technologies will become an even greater part of everyday life.
But there is something we must never allow to disappear: human character.
We should not create a generation that is highly skilled at using technology but unable to respect its teachers. We should not raise children who can find answers instantly on the internet but cannot admit when they are wrong or apologize for their mistakes.
True progress is not simply about becoming more technologically advanced.
True progress occurs when knowledge develops alongside character, intelligence develops alongside responsibility, and freedom develops alongside discipline.
Therefore, the goal of education today should not be to return completely to the past. Instead, we should preserve the positive values of previous generations while embracing the opportunities provided by modern technology.
Students should be taught to think critically, but they should also be taught good manners. They should be given freedom, but they must also understand responsibility. They should master technology, but they must never lose their character.
Ultimately, schools are not merely institutions where children learn how to answer examination questions. Schools are places where young people are prepared to face life—with knowledge, discipline, responsibility, integrity, and respect for others.
If schools and parents can work together, technological progress will not become a threat to education. Instead, technology can become a powerful tool for creating a generation that is intelligent, independent, disciplined, competitive, respectful, and capable of contributing positively to society.
Education should not only create knowledgeable individuals. It should create good human beings.
That is the challenge of education in the modern era.
