This morning was a meaningful and memorable experience for me as a teacher. I was assigned to serve as a mentor and supervisor for a student participating in the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Olympiad, which was held at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 1 Sukabumi in Parungkuda. This responsibility was not only an assignment, but also a valuable opportunity for me to support a student in developing her academic abilities.
The student I accompanied was Memey, a fifth-grade student. In this Olympiad, I was specifically responsible for mentoring Memey in the Integrated Science and Social Studies competition, which was conducted during the first session. As a mentor, my role was not only to accompany her during the competition, but also to provide encouragement and help her feel prepared and confident before taking part in the event.
After arriving at the venue, the atmosphere was already quite lively. Participants from various madrasahs gathered together with their respective teachers and mentors. The event began with an opening ceremony. In an orderly and enthusiastic atmosphere, all participants attended the ceremony, which officially marked the beginning of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Olympiad.
After the opening ceremony ended, the participants were directed to the computer laboratory to take part in the competition. Unlike conventional competitions that use printed question sheets, this Olympiad was conducted online. The participants answered the questions using computers provided by the organizing committee.
I accompanied Memey until she entered the competition room. Before she started answering the questions, I gave her some simple advice: to remain calm, read each question carefully, and answer according to what she had learned and understood. I also reminded her that participating in an Olympiad is not only about winning or losing, but also about learning, gaining valuable experience, and evaluating her own abilities.
When the competition began, Memey started answering the questions on the computer. I could only provide support from outside the room in accordance with the competition rules. I could see her determination and concentration as she worked through each question. As a teacher, I felt proud to see a student having the courage to participate in an academic competition and make an effort to give her best.
The experience also provided me with a valuable lesson. Being a teacher and mentor is not simply about accompanying a student to a competition. It is also about providing motivation, guidance, encouragement, and confidence. Participating in an Olympiad can become an important experience that contributes to a child's academic and personal development.
I hope Memey's experience in participating in the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Olympiad will become a valuable memory and inspire her to continue learning and improving herself. Regardless of the final result, her courage to compete, make an effort, and represent her madrasah is already an achievement worthy of appreciation.
